When someone starts an unconstrained cloud backup or Steam download, those oversized memory queues fill to capacity. Because network switches process packets on a strict First-In, First-Out (FIFO) basis, time-sensitive UDP packets (such as your gaming coordinates or VoIP audio) are forced to wait at the back of a multi-megabyte buffer queue. The result is pure, unnecessary latency inflation.

The definitive cure for bufferbloat is Smart Queue Management (SQM), specifically algorithms like CAKE (Common Applications Kept Enhanced) and FQ-CoDel (FlowQueue - Controlled Delay).
